Accessories - The Rosin
A brand new bow won't have rosin on it, so it won't make sound when played - it'll just glide over the strings in silence! I remember the first time I found that out years ago as a child, and it was curious to say the least!
My curious face!
So put a wee bit of rosin on your bow before you play. π
Alright...say you're in the violin shop and you've just decided which violin to get, and the assistant shows you lots of blocks of rosin as your necessary accessory. What's the difference between them? Don't they do the same job?! π€·ββοΈ |
Well, basically there are two main types: light and dark rosin.

Dark rosin?
It becomes a little stickier over time, but if you live in a colder, drier part of the world, it's less likely for this to happen. Definitely not good for warm, humid locations. Dark rosins can produce a warm, rich sound when played.

Light Rosin?
It creates more dust when played, so gently clean your violin after you've finished practising - it stops dust build up over time, so it won't form a sticky layer on the violin. Light rosin produces a bright sound on the instrument.

π‘ Quick Tip
Don't get bogged down with which is best. Every player has their favourite. Over time, they'll hit on one that they like. When you're starting out, get one which gives a solid grip with the strings. You're going to be focusing on bowing techniques, and for that, you need consistency with as few variations of rosins types as possible.

A wee bit extra info
If you're buying your violin at a music store, staff will apply the first layer for you and they'll show you how to do it yourself as well.
